When you’ve got the required length, give yourself an extra 10 minutes in the morning. “To style, blow dry it over to the side to get that little quiff and use some salt spray for hold. All that hot air will mean you will need a heat protecting spray and also buy a serum to tame the frizz and keep it healthy.”
David Beckham
David Beckham’s hair has gathered almost as many column inches as his sporting prowess. The footballing fashion legend is a man so well put together he’s even got his own award-winning grooming brand and his cuts are ever changing but consistently hit the back of the net. Arguably the greatest player of all time (we’ll look at the other one later) Cristiano Ronaldo’s crisp, tight cut perfectly suits his dedication to the sport. The main point of interest on this style comes from the parting line that would have been carved in by a trimmer according to Carr.

“Ask for a low taper fade. Then a number two around the sides. Shape it up nice and sharp at the front. Give it a scissor all over. Make sure you keep the nice round shape as you don’t want it boxy – it’s not a flat top. In the mornings you just have to comb it out and use a curling cream to give it a nice texture and make sure you condition it.”

“Then use a clay. His hair is really blond, so you don’t want to overwhelm it with a greasy product like a pomade as it will take away the colour. You can even just use a hairspray.”

Despite the wait, Carr notes that long hair is a good option for guys with ramrod straight hair like Bale. “Long hair is easier to maintain when you have straight hair. Sometimes guys with straight hair struggle to style it when it’s short, but here you just need to put it in a loose bun and let it hang down the back.”

“You can see someone has taken time and effort to get that colour as it’s not an easy one to get,” notes Carr. “Go to someone that’s fully qualified and does colouring every single day. You will go through the process of bleaching it and then after you’d have to put in a silver toner which will bring it down and get rid of the oranges or the yellows that you don’t want.
“Sometimes you can’t do it all in one sitting because you don’t want to damage or stretch the hair. A colour technician will know by the strength of your hair and checking its elasticity whether you will need more than one.”
Sergio Ramos
While Real Madrid centre back Sergio Ramos might not be the cleanest player when it comes to his on-field play his hair is as crisp and tidy as they come. “Ramos has great hair,” enthuses Carr. “The beard helps a whole lot too. Without the beard, it can look too clean and make you look quite young. We don’t wanna call anyone no schoolboy.
“Wear this look with less product and it will fall down naturally and create an undercut feel to it. Whereas if you put more product in it to hold it up it will feel like a pompadour or high quiff faded around the back and sides. You’ll probably be having to go to the barbers once a week, not trimming the top every time, but just keeping the sides tidy.”

TAG Heuer has long been the everyman’s Swiss watch, but, in recent years, collaborations with Cara Delevingne and Cristiano Ronaldo made some do a double-take. This year, however, it’s referencing the best bit about its history: motoring heritage. Forget the Monaco or Carrera, this new Autavia piece is the perfect accessory to a vintage Porsche 911. And if you don’t have one, the watch’s caseback has a steering wheel on it, so you can look at that to remind yourself of what could have been.

Rolex Yacht-Master 42
Black watches are cool. But all-black watches can sometimes look cheap, and you might struggle to tell the time. Thankfully, Rolex know this and have combined the best of both worlds. An all-black bezel, strap and dial meets a white gold case and easy-to-read white hour markers in the new Yacht-Master, which may be the coolest watch Rolex has released in some time.

Zenith El Primero A386 Revival
Watch brands often name their creations like coordinates – that is, long and confusing. Zenith has kept it simple with the new El Primero A386 Revival, which is (surprise) a revival of the El Primero A386, one of the most respected watches in its history. It’s basically an exact replica of the original El Primero chronograph, but rendered in either white, rose or yellow gold and limited to fifty pieces each.

Oris Aquis Clean Ocean
Luxury watches probably aren’t the first thing that come to mind when you think ‘sustainability’. But, Oris has partnered with Pacific Garbage Screening on a watch that highlights the increasing threat of plastic to our world’s oceans. The piece itself is a classic dive watch, with dial and bezel colours reminiscent of the sea; a recycled plastic ‘medallion’ built into the caseback, and a special box made of environmentally friendly algae.

Breitling Navitimer Ref. 806 1959
Here we have another re-make, and just like the Zenith, it’s a very accurate re-edition of an early Breitling from 1959. It’s a watch that Pete “Maverick” Mitchell or Tony Stark’s dad might wear, and the many numbers on its dial allow you to work out the mph of your plane, or your car, or your feet as you walk to Tesco. In other words, it’s probably more intelligent than you.

March L.A.B. Mansart
Scrapping for attention among the big names in Basel are smaller upstarts like March L.A.B., who don’t have the history but are often more interesting. Take the Mansart (named after the French architect), which looks as though it belongs in a black and white film with its sharp lines and dial-within-a-dial. Wear it once and immediately become a whisky drinker.

Nomos Club Sport Neomatik 42
Diving watches are usually obvious things, with chunky cases and loud bezels, if bezels can indeed, be loud. This isn’t Nomos’ way of doing things though – the German brand is all minimal, Bauhaus-inspired design and restrained detailing. True to form then, its new Club Sport is waterproof to 300m, the same as a Rolex Submariner, and still manages to still look dressy. Impressive.

Zodiac Aerospace GMT Chronograph
Here’s a diving watch true to the classic form, although it’s only water resistant to 200m. You can worry about that when you’re wearing it in the bath. Zodiac is known for its aqua-friendly pieces which come in at relatively affordable prices, and this one has a zany blue/grey bezel and contrasting red GMT hand. Funky.

Bulgari Octo Finissimo Chronograph GMT
If Batman was a watch, this would be it. You can imagine pressing the top right-hand side pusher and a Batarang flying out; push the bottom one and you might hear a sarcastic growl. In reality, it’s the thinnest mechanical chronograph ever made, a record that Bulgari seems to beat with every new release. Wear it and forget about it. Then get angry when you ding it and remember the $17,600 price tag.

The 55th anniversary of the lynchpin Carrera prompts the launch of a tourbillon chronograph version, which comes with a “Viper Head” chronometry certificate from the Besançon Observatory. Featuring a dark-blue ceramic case with matching bezel and blue-tinted movement components, it will be produced in just 155 examples.
When Hannah Lucas was 15 years old, she was diagnosed with a chronic condition called postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome or POTS. Essentially, the cardiac disorder makes it difficult for her heart to pump blood to her brain, causing her to faint often. As a result, she missed about 200 days of her freshman year of high school—and instead of responding with empathy, her peers bullied her, one boy in her class even sexually threatening her. Eventually, with Lucas’s symptoms, classmates’ reactions, and the pressure of all-honors courses, she fell into a deep depression. Self-harm, disordered eating, and a suicide attempt followed.
Lucas wanted help but found that difficult to express when she needed it most. “At that lowest moment in my life, I just wished that I had a button that I could press whenever I was not okay to instantly notify my friends and family that I [needed help],” Lucas tells InStyle. So the morning after her attempted suicide, Lucas and her then 12-year-old brother Charlie developed an app to do just that.
One year later, Hannah’s notOK app, a digital panic button, is helping teens and adults struggling with mental health by mobilizing their safety net whenever they need it. “When you press the notOK button, whenever you’re not okay, whatever that means for you, it instantly sends a text to your [up to] five most trusted contacts with a message saying, ‘Hey, it’s me, and I’m not okay. Please call me, text me, and come and check up on me,’ along with the user’s GPS location.”
Developing duo: The day after Hannah’s attempted suicide, her little brother, whom she’s extremely close with, was devastated. But the two saw their personal tragedy as a catalyst for change, and Charlie immediately tapped his tech skills to help his sister realize her vision. “Me and my brother, we’re as thick as thieves,” Hannah says. “So when I told him [about my app idea], he immediately started wire framing it, which is essentially the prototype app that you send to developers to show them exactly what you want. And he worked alongside the developers throughout the entire process.”
Overcoming obstacles: For Lucas, being vocal about her experience with depression and suicide has been one of the greatest challenges of this project. “But for me, showing myself that I can do this and also being strong enough to talk about what I went through means a lot,” she says. “Because initially, I thought strength was just dealing with [depression] and not telling everybody or anybody. But I really worked up the courage to talk about the mental illness aspects that I went through. And too me, that’s strength.”
“All last year, I was ‘that sick kid.’ I had to quit sports. My parents even sat down and had a talk with me about college because they didn’t think that I would be able to go,” Lucas says. But she leaned on her close friends and brother, who helped her rebuild confidence. “My friends just say, if you have any major interviews, don’t forget to give me a shout out. So shout out to all my best friends who supported me the entire time.”
School of thought: Lucas says that building her app has helped her realign her priorities and look at high school, and its many social challenges, as a “blip on the radar.” Her mental health and happiness are now her most important considerations, and she’s excited to share what she’s learned with the rest of the world, especially fellow teenagers. “My brother and I even got to teach a class [about the app] while on spring break in New York,” Lucas says, adding that she’d welcome more opportunities to speak to groups. The second best part of the trip? She and Charlie visited the video studio where BuzzFeed creates its viral, mesmerizing Tasty videos. “Honestly, that was the highlight for me because I love food.”
Her badass philosophy: “A badass woman is someone who knows what’s expected of her and knows the stereotype that’s instantly placed on her as soon as she walks in a room—and still doesn’t care. She still goes on to exceed every [expectation].”
Best advice: “I want people to understand that it is OK to be not OK. That’s our motto,” Lucas says. “Everybody takes care of their physical health because that’s what they can see, but your brain controls everything, so why not take care of your mental health too?” Lucas hopes that the app will lower the barrier to reaching out for help and, eventually, help end the stigma.
A promising future: Lucas has her sights set on college, POTS be damned. And while she’s still figuring out what that will look like, she knows one thing: “Whatever I study is going to align with my passion, which is changing the world for the better,” Lucas says. “In my family, we always talk about the issues that we see on TV in the news, like all the shootings or our brilliant president. You can complain about all that stuff and see all the faults in the world, but if you’re not going to work to change it, then you’re just not doing anything, you know?”

“You learn that the friendships you took for granted as a kid actually fall away pretty quickly if you neglect them and that even if you don’t, time has a habit of changing people and your best friend from school is different since he got married or that guy you did a bunch of blow with at university never really got the hang of stopping that and isn’t as much fun anymore.”

He discovered that those that had managed to make the emotional and physical attachment to music actually have different brain structures than those that don’t.
The research showed that they tended to have a denser volume of fibres that connect their auditory cortex and areas that process emotions, meaning the two can communicate better.
“The idea being that more fibers and increased efficiency between two regions means that you have more efficient processing between them.“
This means if you do get chills from music you are more likely to have stronger and more intense emotions.

Although the study was only small in size Sachs is currently conducting further research which will look at the brains activity when listening to songs that register certain reactions.

ISTANBUL – A commercial plane that skidded off a runway after landing in northern Turkey dangled precariously off a muddy cliff with its nose only a few feet from the sea.
